92 lumina

Yesterday I noticed the battery gauge was extremely low and I tried to start it today. It tries to turn over, but won't. I know it may be the alternator but could it possibly be anything else? I have no idea about cars and hoped someone here could help me out.

This same thing happened to me. My dad and I replaced the power packs, and it worked for a while and then it went back to doing the same thing. Then, our mechanic hired a guy to hook up a computer to the car to test all the parts, and he found the problem. I am sorry I can not remember the problem with my car, but take it to a place where they will hook it up to a computer. I am sure they will find the problem.

Hope this helps,
Nikk

I have found it best from lessons learned to start with the basic's first. It may just be your battery or battery connections. On 92's the battery is below the washer fluid holding tank. You will need to unbolt one crossarm, holding tank retaining pins and electrical connection box to access the battery. You can then check the battery connections, pop open the battery caps to check battery acid level, etc. Please remember to put safety first with any battery and electrical activities (eyewear, gloves, etc., etc !).

Of course if you are not handy with tools, and if it is possible to get it running with a jump........ Have a friend give you a jump and follow you to a autozone or other parts place. They can check the battery / charging system free of change and give you some idea of where to start.

How old is your battery? After a certain number of years, batteries lose their ability to hold a charge, no matter how good your alternator is. However, a dying battery could also ruin your alternator. 618Stanley is right. Go to autozone and have them do a charging system check.
