Cool Completed - Ferrari Testarossa (512 TR)

Just finished the Rosso Ferrari 512 TR. Painted it Cobra Colors Grigio Alloy (clearcoated w/Tamiya clear), which looks really nice on the Testarossa. Interior colors are Tamiya Buff and custom mixed dark blue acrylics.

The parts look great in the kit, body/details are really nice. But final assembly was a nightmare because many of said beautiful parts didn't fit worth a damn . This model almost was crushed before I put it down. I guess Rosso kits really were engineered by ex-Fujimi employees . The chassis/interior fit and tolerance stack proves it...this was no Tamiya, and twenty times more stressful to build than a Tamiya Modena chassis, or the Hasegawa Miura chassis I recently built. Oh well, finished it looks pretty good, the only thing I hate is how the side scoops can't be blended into the body w/o a line (Tamiya's Testarossa is no better...Monogram's is actually quite well done...imagine that!). It looks worse in the photo than IRL, but it's still a cheesy solution to molding that area.

Sir, that is some beautiful makeup on this old , facelifted woman.

I like it, and it doesn't show at all you had trouble, so either you're a chronic lier, either you (and this is the most plausible explanation) are one hell of a modeler!

another great jearb.

Nice build. Great color choice. A little putty couldnt blend those scoops? It just takes some tricks and patience. All-in-all, nice build.

Re: Completed - Ferrari Testarossa (512 TR)

Nice build, but as Mike said a little putty and a little patience is all it takes.

That area has to be made in multiple parts because only two of the five strakes extend all the way in to the door. The other three are connected at both ends, but 'floating' in the middle. If it were moulded in one piece, the body could not be removed from the mould without ripping the three floating strakes straight off or a very complex multi part mould would have to be used resulting in a lot of flash as the moulds wore out.

Thanks, though it's not that easy a solution, you have to see how the parts are broken down to realize that putty/painting this particular model that way is easier said than done. Yes I could do it if I really wanted to, but I simply wasn't going to bother w/it, far too much hassle for this particular kit. If anything I'd mask the strakes and paint the whole recessed area black. The strakes are a design element that I particularly loathe about these cars....Koenig's look better because they ditched the stupid Char Broil look on the sides.

Re: Completed - Ferrari Testarossa (512 TR)

Tamiya's Testarossa kit has the same problem.

You can either carefully remove the louvers with a very sharp knife (which I did and worked), or use the welding technique to fill the gap without using putty.

IMO, welding would be the easier solution. Basically, you apply an excessive amount of styrene glue to the contact surfaces, and let the molten plastic fill the gaps. When the plastic is completely hardened, make a few thin sanding sticks by wrapping strips of sand paper (of several grit counts of your choice) around pieces of 1.0 mm thick plastic sheet. If you make the tools like that on your own, that area won't be too difficult to fix.

Re: Completed - Ferrari Testarossa (512 TR)

That's one sweet looking TR. Is it making the trip to B'ham next week? Awesome color for the body style. Looking forward to seeing it in person to get a good view of the interior.
