Different shafts for a 10 bolt rear end?

Went to order a new axle shaft for a 92 K1500 Silverado, four wheel drive and everything was going good, got the axle and went to replace it, we got the old one out and put the new one in, and hell if it's the wrong one. We measured and the one that we had taken out of the truck is 1.25" diameter on the end of the shaft where the splines are at, but the one they gave us is only 1", so it just rotates in there and you can here the teeth grind on each other. Called them back and they said that there is only one axle shaft option for the 10 bolt, the only other one they have is for a 14 bolt. Is there anything else i need to know, because we recently replaced brake cylinders and they had asked us whether it was a heavy duty axle or not.

Re: Different shafts for a 10 bolt rear end?

I'm pretty sure there are different size 10-bolt axles. The number of bolts should be counted on the RING GEAR, not on the cover. Almost all covers have the same number of bolts as the ring gear, but just to be safe, always count the ring gear bolts.

Also count the splines...there are 28 spline & 30 spline 10 bolt rears

Four-wheel drive axles are 1.25 in.-- two-wheel drive 10-bolt axles are smaller--they sent you a two-wheel drive axle!
