my brother has a 95 escort auto trans he says it run great until you put it in gear the motor stalls could the torque converter be bad or is there anything else to look for

There are a number of things that could cause this other than the torque converter. In order to make a diagnosis we need to know the size engine, type of fuel injection system, mileage, and any other maintenance history information you can provide.
Some of the things to look for:
1. Idle speed incorrect. (Check the VECI label under the hood for correct RPM at idle.
2. Distributor components damp or damaged.
3. Faulty or incorrectly gapped sparkplugs.
4. Faulty emissions system components.
