Changing Engines

This past fall, we had to switch engines in my fiance's 92 Eagle Talon becuae we were told that the motor was gone. We purchased a 2.0 DOHC Non-Turbo engine from a junkyard locally. We took the motor out of the Talon and put this other motor in. The only problem is, the motor that we put in came out of a 1990 Plymouth Laser. We had to switch the Throttle bodies because they were different so the TPS Sensor would fit. It will start when it is warm out, but it will not start in the cold and it takes a really long time to start it and when it does, it does not run good at all. We brought it to a Garage and the owner said that he could not get the motor to talk to the computer. A few mechanics have told us that we need to get the ECM for a 1990 Plymouth Laser since that is where the motor came out of.

Can anyone confirm this or if anyone has any suggestions, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you very much for your help

Re: Changing Engines

you need to swap two wires on the ecu. i forget which they are but check out vfaq.com and you can probably find it. if not somebody on here might be able to help you. the cold start problem sounds like the FIAV (fast idle air valve) this makes the engine run faster when its cold

Thanks for your help. We will try that ASAP. Where is the FIAV located so I can check that too.

Thanks again!

I looked on that website. It says about switching a 1990 ECM into a 1991 or higher. But I could not find putting a 1990 motor into a 1992 ECM and trying to talk to it.

If anyone can help me out on what wires to switch we would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks

Re: Changing Engines

you just have to do the reverse of putting a 90 ecu into a 91+. i would have thought that would be obvious lol
