Odd Brakes

on my 89 Towncar most of the time the brakes are soft likea feather pillow like they should be, but after driving a while, when i apply brakes, the pedal fights me, its very hard, and when i get enough pressure to slow the car, the car pulls hard to the left. any ideas on what might be going on for them to work properly most of the time, but sometimes do that funny thing?

Re: Odd Brakes

I would try to bleed the brakes to make sure there is not any air in the lines.
I bought a self bleader from Sears for like $12.
It will save you from having to have someone pump the brakes while you crack the lines.

Pulling hard to the left...

This ususally means there is an imbalance in the brakes. One or more wheels have a problem. Some ideas= shoe adjustment in rear; one rear axle bearing leak (axle grease slicks up the shoes and drum); A wheel brake cylinder leak (brake fluid on shoes and drum); mal adjusted shoes on one wheel; front calipher problem and more. Leaks are easy to determine by pulling the drum cover. I myself had an axle bearing leak in RR wheel. I had the brake pull problem-pretty severe in hard stop. A rear axle bearing leak would not be unusual for a 15+ year old car. The rear seals wear out.

these are good suggestions, thanks for them, the car only has 80,000 miles on it, and the problem is intermitent. so i think ill have the lines bled or attempt it myself . if no improvement then to the shop to have th brakes checked
