91 Ranger

Hey, i just got given a 91 ranger 4.0 V6, only 70K miles on it. It was sitting in a driveway for like a year or so so i needed to give it some attention. So far i have done the usual maintanance, Oil, Air, Fuel Filter, New tires and replaced a leaky gasket cover in the engine, also new solenoid. i also will be installing a new flowmaster exhaust this week as the original is rusted out.

I need to fix a powersteering leak i have which is stinking up my engine, and also need to get the AC checked as it doesnt work.

I have been thinking about a 66mm throttle body, dunno if it is worth it though?? Anyone out there suggest anything else i can do to it without breaking the bank? i was thinking of new sound system, but im in no rush. Is it worth getting a K&N air filter? or why can't i put a cold air RAM intake in the engine? they dont make em for early fords. This may be a dumb question but i just moved here from europe so i am not entirely used to american motors.

Just seeing if you had any opinions.

What kind of exhaust are you looking at? Heads back or cat back? A completely new exhaust system with headers will give you a nice sound, improve MPG, and overall improve everything.

The T.b. is dependant on if you want better power mid/high range. The smaller the T.B. the more low end torque you'll get. The reason for this is the volume of air that is entering the engine. When it's idles low, you want higher volume, but when it's hitting the higher RPM it might choke it out, causing you to slow down. You need to find a happy medium that you like. I would leave it unless you're going to cam it.

I hear the K&N adds a little, but I like them because they're reuseable. Nothing noticeable I'd imagine.

As for the cold air intake, I am not positive if the 4.0 Ranger has the same set up as my 88 2.9L, but it already has sort of a cold ram air set up. I would look into a cold air set up for a 65mm set up on a mustang. Definately something you'll need to fabricate.

Pete

I bought a Flowmaster American Thunder Cat back exhaust. the stock was pretty crap. I haven't decided how much to invest in it and so headers haven't been a major focus. i guess once i have the exhaust in place and the AC and Power Steering problem sorted i will be satisfied for a while until i replenish funds and think about upgrading some more.

Thanks for replying
