Fuel pump problem please help

Hi,

I hope someone can help me. I hope I did not post this twiced I am new to forums.

I have a 1990 Ford F150, 300-6, 4X4. I had to replace the fuel pump in the front tank. Now I have a new problem.

From what I have read when you turn the key to the on position the pump should start and then stop after 1 second if you do not crank the truck. Mine keeps running. This is causing it to pump to much gas to the intake. If I turn the key to crank it quickly it will crank and run like crap but then it smooths out after a few minutes and runs like my baby is supposed to. However, if I am not quick enough on the key then it will not start. You can smell the gas at this time.

I replaced the Fuel pump relay and the ECC relay. No good. What can I try next.

I am currently unemployed so I can not afford to take it to the shop right now. Which is why I even thought about tackling the fuel pump. HeeHee.

If anyone has any ideas please help. Just remember I am a non-mechanical female learning to be mechanical. I don't know one part from the other.

Thanks,
Susan

what you need to do is, check to see if the relay is coming on and going off when you turn the key on. if it is then you have a short to power between the pump and relay if its not you have a short to power between the relay and battery.

Thanks for the info. How can I tell if the relay is coming on and off?

Anyway I went out this afternoon and the crazy thing started right up. Tried it several times. Looks like I am back in business. If it starts acting up again I will be looking for that short.

My friend said that it may have need to reset with the computer. But who knows. I am just happy to be able to goooooooo.
