Hi There Again, I Have The 96' Jetta Auto That Stalls When I Put It In Drive Or Reverse. I Cleaned The Maf And It Did Ok For A Couple Days I Did Not Drive It Over 5 Miles And It Started Acting Up Again. Do You Know If There Is Something Like An Idle Siliniod Or Sensor. Could This Be The Problem??? Please Help.....

Jetta Stalls
Yes I Also Cleaned The Trottle Body, Intake Hose, Replaced Air Filter. Plugs Were Changed By Previous Owner Less Than 2000 Miles Ago, Gap Was A Little Off On The One I Pulled Out But I Don't Think This Would Cause It To Die In Drive And Reverse, Also The Cap And Rotor Look Original, Car Has 98000, But Again I Do Not Think That Is The Culprate Because It Idles Fine In Park And Neutral. Thanks Much Help Is Very Appriciated, Any Replies Are One Step Closer To Finding My Problem So Don't Be Shy People. Thanks

Re: 96' Jetta Auto Stalls
What RPM does it idle at in park? Is the check engine light on? Have you looked at all the vacuum hoses for condition problems?

i have checked and replaced all vacum lines needed. in park it idels at 900 rpm, when in drive or reverse it drops to 600-700 and sometimes dies. i have cleaned the throttle body with spray but not with a toothbrush, i will try this. also my cel is on. i went to a local autozone and they did not have the correct fitting to read the codes. it is the obd-2 that i will need right. another across town has the obd-2, i would like to know if thats the one i need before i risk driving 25 miles to get there. thank you all so much, please keep feeding me any info you can.

Ok Latest Is I Cleaned Entire Throttle Body With A Tooth Brush. I Drove It Atleast 5 Miles It Does Not Die But Still Idles Really Rough In Drive And Reverse. Could This Be Bad Gas? Or Water In The Tank? The Car Sat For 6 Months Before I Bought It??? If So What Do I Do?????

Re: 96' jetta auto
Did you clear them and they keep coming back? They stay stored until you clear them. I would clear them and see what comes back. You may have already taken care of 1 2 and 3. 4 means there is a problem communicating with the check engine light. (Does the light come on when you first start the car for a few seconds?). I dont have experience with #5, but my guess is that there is a vacume leak at or around the evap canister.
Bosch can you back me up? |

I Am Taking It Back In The Morning To Check The Codes Again, I Have A Used Maf And I'm Gonna Install It. They Did Clear The Codes. The Light Did Not Come Back On Right Away, He Said It Could Take Up To 20 Mile To Do So. Were Is This Canister Located So I Can Check The Vacum Lines. Once Again Thanks So Much. I Really Appreciate It.

Re: 96' Jetta Auto Stalls
P1613 is a code for the actual check engine light malfunctioning. The P1582 & P0102 are probably related to a bad MAF, but check the connector first. The P0440 is probably a bad EVAP canister purge valve solenoid. I PM'd you more info on these.
