91 Silvia N/A to Turbo Conversion, Which Motor?
hey,
with a lot of thought and looking into the SR20DE vs SR20DET ive decided to do a Turbo conversion on my 1991 Slivia Q's and i have been hearing heaps about Black Top and REd Top Engines..... im using a half cut to get all the parts i need off but i just wanted to know What is the better engine SR20DET Red Top or SR20DET Black Top ? if your talking about s13 black and red tops...the only real diffrence (major diff) is black tops came in the newer s13's, therefore almost always having less miles on them...now if your talking about s14 black tops...then sometimes they come with the t28db turbo...but i think that is the only major diff there...anyone else enlighten this man...or correct what i have said?

The S13 Black Top has more power potential becuase it has bigger ports than the Red Top it also has a slightly higher HP stock.
The S14 Humptops all came with VVT and T28s (some of which had Ball Bearings) and make 217HP stock. |

ahh ok cheers guys. and yeah i was meaning the S13 model. so to do the conversion getting a black top would be the better way to go if i can find one..... cheers

And so by that logic the R34 and Supra have 276HP?
I said it was slight not 50HP... Bigger Ports... Better ECU Tune... still exactly 203HP at exactly 6000RPM...

I think what rw240 meant was that even though the blacktop and redtop are rated at the same power, the blacktop is slighty more powerful. Like the GT-Rs and Supras, they are both rated at 276 (Japan limit), but they post up very high numbers if you take out the lmiting shit.

They are limited to that amount of hp because in Japan you can't have more then 276hp (now it's 281hp). If all they had to do was underate the engine, why the hell woul they have a limit? They could send the Cadillac Sixteen over there, say it's 281hp and they say it's ok, you get home dyno it and it puts down 1000hp? I don't think so.

yea in japan to prevent a power struggle over who gets the most power from stock car they limited the power of factory cars at 276 or i guess now 281

i didnt think they had limiters as such i thought they just restricted parts of the motor forcing the HP to be lower, like a massivly restrictive exhaust system and air intake on a turbo would drop the HP out put quiet alot....with a Turbo S13 Silvia people are getting 20KW increase at the rear wheels just by changing over to a larger less restrictive exhaust system.

this limit may be in place but i've heard rumors that, even in LIMITED form, the R34 put down something closer to 320hp stock.

Yeah, I dunno exactly how they limit it, if it's mechanical or electronic, a restrictive intake and exhaust seems like as good a guess as any. And yeah, the R34 does put down around 320, once the restrictions are taken out, similar to an MKIV.
