Question 89 Buick Century won't start

The engine will turn over. I checked the fuel pump and the engine is getting fuel. It is not getting a spark from the spark pluggs. The wires are new. Could all three coil packs have gone out or is there something else that is causing the problem? Any help would be great.

Remove the ecm and take it to an Autozone and have it tested for free. Make sure the distributor cap is without cracks.

Re: 89 Buick Century won't start

If you don't have an Hays repair manual get one, they can be of great help. According to my manual the ecm is loacated behind the glove box attached to the passangers side wall . It says to take off the negative battery cable before you begin. 1. Remove the glove box 2. remove retaining bolts. 3. Slide out the ecm box far enough to unplug the connectors. As far as I can tell from the pictures the ecm case is as large as a non-factory car stereo.

No distributor cap on this car. That is why he has coil packs.

No spark on start is most likely a problem with the ignition module, not the ECM the ECM does not provide spark until you are above 400 RPM.

NakedDancer-Please be careful to only give advise when you have good info. This person is most likely going to waste time because of bad advise. I am sure this was the problem on a car you or one of your friends had, but this is much less common than the module due to the heat and vibration under the hood.

The Ignition Module is located under the coil packs. Take it to Auto Zone and they will test it for free. Good Luck.

I think he really was trying to help. But when you jump straight to the ECM for a no spark/no start condition?????????????
Oh Well, Good Luck.

Re: 89 Buick Century won't start

Yeah I realized no distributor after I posted the first time just forgot to say in my second post. Anyway the ecm has been a pain in my ass many time in other cars so I jump to that since it's easy to remove and free to get tested. Anyway hope things work out well for you.
