Need an OBD Code confirmation

My cousin has a '98 Durango with a 5.2 L. A mechanic read the code for her.
I don't have the codes for her vehicle. Can someone confirm which speed sensor a P0500 code is for? Is this the transmission sensor, or the differential sensor?

Her ABS light is on, and the speedometer doesn't work.

Re: Need an OBD Code confirmation

For me, ABS light on, plus speedometer not working, was fixed by replacing rear differential speed sensor.
(I don't know the code, maybe someone else can confirm).

you can visit this website and it'll tell you exactly what that code means: http://autorepair.about.com/cs/troub...l_obd_main.htm

Re: Need an OBD Code confirmation

Thanks for the link, but I'm afraid it still doesn't answer King's question (and I now have the same question myself).

The link only says it's a vehicle speed sensor malfunction. But there are two speed sensors on the truck. The question is whether it's the TRANSMISSION sensor, or the REAR DIFFERENTIAL sensor. How do you figure out which one it is? Continuity test on each? Voltage output? Resistance?

I was lucky when I fixed mine, because I had a 50-50 chance and apparently I picked the correct one, the rear diff. But there must be a better way to know which one is the real culprit rather than "luck".

Thanks !
Dave

Re: Need an OBD Code confirmation

Thanks for the quick feed back.
DurangoDave is right. I read through a number of threads here in the forum regarding the two symptoms, ABS light and no speedo. The most common culprit was the differential speed sensor. The mechanic told my cousin it was the transmission speed sensor, which was contrary to what I had read. My cuz, she's on the ropes financially right now, and I hope to win the same coin toss that Dave did, for her sake.
Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Re: Need an OBD Code confirmation

Thought I'd follow up:
I held off on installing the trans. speed sensor. The differential speed sensor seems to be hard to come by. None of my local parts stores had it.
I did find it online however at www.rockauto.com.
I hate paying dealer prices.
The differential speed sensor was the problem. My cousin took the trans speed sensor back to the store, and coincedentally ran across a guy with the same problem. They were trying to sell him the wrong sensor. She set 'em straight.

You guys Rock! thanks for the help.

Re: Need an OBD Code confirmation

Kings - Good news!
Thanks for the feedback, that's something a lot of folks don't bother to do here.
I think the key to whether it's the tranny or the diff speed sensor is whether or not the speedo is affected....no speedo or intermittent speedo seems to nail it down as the differential sensor.
Glad you found the part outside the stealership....I couldn't and I can't stand paying rip-off prices either.
Dave
