2000 GA GT: What's the smell?

I started my car this morning and a "rotten egg" smell came out of the heater vents, it gradually went away. Later that day after driving about 10 minutes or so I was at a red light and the smell came back for a short time again. Any ideas? if so, what is involved in repairing the problem?

Try a good long highway run, get the exhaust good and hot, likely cat. conv. deposits build-up.

Thank you, we will do that for sure. Have you had experience with this solving the problem for good or is it possible for a mechanical person/owner to clean it "ourselves?" Or is that another job only for the "dealer" for that car? Do they break and this is how you find out? Thanks... again

Check your battery. It is probably swollen and about to explode. This is what mine did. The acid leaking leads to the egg smell.

Ya know, my battery has been low and we have had to jump it lately since it was run down due to the light switch left on. It was okay for a day or two but won't keep a charge now. We were going to have to get one anyway. We never even thought of that, thanks, that is an eye opener!!!

Hmmm... I would've guessed heater core, I've never even heard of those others causing it, but I guess now I have. If it's not those other things, possibly check heater core.

Watch it if it is the cat. conv. when I worked at a Pontiac dealership there were a few times that the cat got plugg up a bit and would get really hot to the point that the damn thing began to glow a bright red. one actually exploded! If you "blow out the exhaust" do yourself a favor and pull over and take a look under the car if its glowing shut it down and let it cool.
Good luck.
