572 vs. the 4 bangers!
I posted before about putting a 572 bbc in my 89 iroc, and i was thinking that if i did get the thing in there, how would it compare to those damn imports? u think they'd stand a chance or would i be stuck at the streetlights burning away my Goodyears? i just want em to wittnesss the power of american muscle.

Re: 572 vs. the 4 bangers!
it will snap the car in half, if it dosnt destroy the tranny and rear end first.
my suggestion, build the car to handle power first. full suspension system, (check out the hotchkiss TSS setup for the camaro to get an idea) subframe connectors are a must, and a rollcage wouldnt hurt either. then a 12 bolt rear end. a TH400 specially built for the engine. set the 12 bolt rear up with a four link rear and tubbed sheetmetal with big slicks, and then youll be ready for that 572.

Re: 572 vs. the 4 bangers!
humm, since 572's and above are usually used for drag race engines, you will probably like stated snap youyr car in half. also, i wouldnt call a 89 camaro american muscle. muscle cars stopped around '72 (IMHO)

did you buy this 572 yet? IMO- you'd be better off buying an LS1 engine and using that! Not only are these things efficient, light weight, but they respond well to power improvements. There are many parts for these engines nowadays, you can even run a carb on them if you want! (check out summit racing) They make bolt in kits for these too. you can get all the parts you need with a credit card and telephone. to beat these imports (or anyone else) you need a good power to weight ratio. you'd be adding 2x the weight with the 572 versus the LS1- and that will shift the center of gravity that much more towards the front- giving you an even bigger traction problem. also will hurt handling, too. Keep the car as light as possible and you'll be better off for it. Heavier cars require more power, more fuel, and tend to break parts more ( more torque, stress, etc..) I hope this helps! |

Re: 572 vs. the 4 bangers!
I find it kind of amusing that theres an entire thread devoted to how to make a camaro faster than a 4cyl. import?? Doesnt anyone else???
An Iroc with a 350TPI will eat just about any 4 cyl import.. Build it up a little with your basic performance upgrades, and a few extra's and even a turbo'd or bottle fed 4 banger is gonna have a real hard time keepin up Plus, you have the added efficiency and driveability of the stock 350 engine..

Ok, beef up the car, and put that monster in it. There is nothing that (in my opinion) can replace the sound of a big block, and the sheer raw torque, with your engine...what .... 750 ft lbs of torque?....a sheer monster....DO IT

Re: 572 vs. the 4 bangers!
If you going to have a big whore of an engine like that sub frame connectors will only help so much. I would go with atleast a 6 pt cage to tie the car together a little better.

Re: 572 vs. the 4 bangers!
funny, im building a 302 that will whoop most big blocks that youll find on the street, and get 35 mpg, so ill be able to go faster than the big boys, and still have enough gas to actually get home, what a concept. have you ever even heard an LS1 wind up? with the right exhaust it sounds a helluva lot like a dragster. Cubic inches may have ruled back in the 60's but its a thermodynamic fact that smaller displacement engines run a higher percentage of efficency (thats getting power from a given ammount of air and fuel) than larger engines. Cubes arent the only way to go anymore, simple plane truth. and youre hearing this from a guy who grew up at the strip around 800cid mountain motors, so dont think im an import guy who drives a camaro cuz it happend that way.
