Only this would happen to me...

I was screwing in the sub into the box when the phillips head slipped and hit the surround. It appears to have just chipped it, but when you press on the surround in that spot it's a lot easier to push in than on the other end. I think it might have actually punctured it. Should I just send it in for warranty and say it was damaged on shipping or can I fix this?

Re: Only this would happen to me...

I've read somewhere in someone's worklog or something that if you use rubber cement on both sides, it will seal it up just as strong as before, and be almost as flexible.

I'm more than positive it didn't go all the way through both sides. It appears to be a very small knick in the top.

Ok, to clerify: are we taking about the rubber thing that connects to the cone, or the cone itself? Some pics would be helpful for diagosis.

Stang saw it and said it's perfectly fine. I asked him right after I posted this thread. I posted this simply because he wasn't on AIM at the time, but it won't hurt to get some more reassuring input. I really don't want to warranty it, it's so heavy and I don't want to be without it for weeks on end.

Re: Only this would happen to me...

hmmm... I can only see the 2 pics of the sub in the box. Looks good!! Like I said, a little rubber cement on both sides will fix up even a badly ripped surround. If bumpin thinks it's fine, I'd just run it for a while and see how it holds up. If it does pop through, then you'll have to use cement, but even then it'll be just fine.

It's just a little scratch you don't even have to worry about it. and ppl its not "the rubber thing that connects to the cone" its not even rubber.....its foam (rubatek foam to be exact in RE's case) and It's called the "SURROUND"

I know what it is, but I was using his terms so he could understand what I was talking about. I don't think the amp is coming in today. The mailman already came unless USPS delivers large packages through another truck.

Yup...lol, was just going to say that...

But if anything pick up something called "contact cement" and apply a thin layer with something like a q-tip. In my case UPS actually did fuck mine up a little...but in no way does it affect performance!

Re: Only this would happen to me...

yay I can see all the pictures now! Sorry about calling it rubber... the surround on my wimpy Rockford Fosgate sub is rubber, so I didn't know. I don't think contact cement would be the same as rubber cement, because it's designed to work on two different surfaces and then bond like mad when they touch after curing. I know you know how it works, but my point is that it may never fully dry, and if it does, I don't think it's meant to bend as much as that surround is going to. Rubber cement is much more flexible and will take those stresses better in the long run.

Contact cement is the STANDARD for repairing foam subwoofer surrounds...yeah...
