Re: how long do the timming chains last..on average?
depends on how you drive it. Higher RPMs, low quality oil, late oil changes, etc will shorten it's life. My grandpa's got a Silverado with a 305. The timing chain in that lasted close to 200,000 miles. I have 158,000 miles on my Silverado 350 and the timing is starting to get a little bit sloppy (still runs great). I'll be putting aftermarket gears in it. They are fairly popular for the 350s, and should be the exact same size as the 262. I'd recommend getting a set of gears. They're a bit louder, but last almost forever.

Your right about J-Ri, but you failed to mention that most gear sets are noisy, so most people don't like them (although some people love the noise) If you found a quiet set please let us all know what type that you bought Thanks

Re: how long do the timming chains last..on average?
A gear set has 2 big gears which go where the timing gears go on your engine... plus 2 gears held together with something that looks like a big chain link holding them together. This gear piece links the bigger gears together, replacing the timing chain.
This system lasts practically forever, and can never break. Most racing motors use gears for reliability |

I'd just stick to a quality timing chain and gears. Replace all the seals that you disturb while your at it. |
