Changing Head Gasket.....1995.....Question

I am doing the head gasket on a friends 95 Cav and I am doing it with the intake manifold attatched to the head. I am wondering if it is absolutely necessary to get the head milled. How do I check to see if it is warped? Also, the head is coming off right now but it seems to be attatched to the motor mount? If I take out the remaining 2 bolts, is the passenger side of the engine going to fall to the floor? Shouldn't the motormount be supporting the engine by the iron block and NOT the aluminum head? I don't know where to go from here. Thanks guys.-Jordan

you have to jack up the engine with a block of wood and jack with the oil pan to hold it till youget those put back on and then once they are bolted down you can lower the engine back.

i just replaced mine on a 96 it wasnt fun.

Re: Changing Head Gasket.....1995.....Question

Quich check for head warp is to get a straight piece of wood dowel and roll it over the head surface. Look under the dowel as you roll it, any daylight, warped. Chances are the warp is very minimal and hard to detect, an old-timer trick is to put some water-soluble paint on the head surface [make SURE it is water soluble house paint type stuff that washes off real easy as ya don't want it adhering to the surface or to any of the cylinder ports.]

roll the dowl slowly over the surface, see what the dowel picks up paint'wise, do it bit by bit, wiping the dowel off frequently, the paint lifted off the head surface shows the warp. Imeediately wash the paint off the head afterwards!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Check it with a machinists straight-edge and feeler gauge.

Forgot to add that the machine shop will check it for you if you want. Usually they won't charge you.
