Anyone With Any Knowledge of 90-93 Esprit SE

Ok guys I want to buy one. I don't know why but I really always wanted one. People tell me it's a waste of money, but I don't think so. Am I really being stupid and getting myself into a financial disaster. I understand the car isn't incredibly reliable, but I'm not driving it every day. Just 1-2 days a week. Maybe 4,000 miles a year. What can I expect to pay in yearly service for this vehicle? I'm probably buying one with 20-50K miles on it.

Thanks in advanced

well first let me start off by being serious despite everything. I know ALOT about Lotus. Do NOT get a Lotus, especially those years since they are VERY unreliable. Electrical problems, hoses, engine, etc etc., Even if you plan on only driving it 1-2 times a week. IT WILL BREAK DOWN thats a promise. The power windows will go etc etc. If you want to read a HUGE LIST of problems, go to www.espritfactfile.com
You'll see what I mean.

Now secondly, you are a fucking ricer, and you dont deserve something like a Lotus. So why dont you do everyone a favor, and leave the real cars alone! stupid ricer!

...and you're an asshole. People have their own opinions of what a car should look like, sound like, etc. Just because you don't like it doesn't mean he can't. Then, you say "...leave the real cars alone!" Apparently you think Lotuses are horrible cars, then you tell him to stay away from them, presumably so people like you can get them. You don't want one, and you tell everyone else not to get one. Who will get them then?

BTW...I've read every word on the Esprit Fact File. He is extremely pleased with the cars. He knows their problems, and accepts them. I think Brian can do the same if he chooses.

Again, please keep the flames down. You have no reason to be getting offensive.

I've also read every word on the esprit factfile and I was just looking for a second opinion.

In my eyes I don't see myself as a ricer. I don't have stickers on my car. If you look at my setup it's for performance enhancements and visual enhancements only. I run on 17's because they offer the best performance. The body kit was the latest addition and I thought it gave the car the needed flair it needed. I'm running a 14.7 out of a FWD Fully Loaded Sedan, that's not all that bad. Naturally Aspirated as well. I was just looking into buying a car that would be fun to drive, have some class and exoticness to it. I thought the Lotus was a good example of this. I came here in search of some answers, and if fellow Lotus drivers are like this, than I think I'll veer away from them.

As they say, "Only two good things came out of England. Roaches and the United States" Lotus isn't in that list.

Buy the Lotus, Find a good reliable Lotus Friendly mechanic and you'll be surprised at how reliable the car can be, if you keep it serviced by someone who knows what thier doing. Join a US based Lotus Club to, infact to it before you buy a car, then you get inside knowledge into good and bad cars that are on the market.

And a Stillen equiped Maxima is certianly not rice. Mr Millen (I cant remember wihch brother) was aked by Nissan NZ (since there both ex' Kiwi's) to make a limited edition go fast Maxima for the NZ market in about '97?. The go fast bits were then sold all over the world through Stillen (Steve Millen). I got to drive on of the NZ cars, and despite having wild understear it was a VERY fast car to drive.
If you engoy driving the Maxiam, you'll enjoy the Lotus even more.

Understeer is horrible, but the thick rear sway bar has tamed it, and without throttle it's running neutral with a little oversteer. Dip into the throttle and that front just comes on out.

I drove a Maxima once, my sister was thinking about buying it so we took it for a test drive. it was completely stock and it was fast! but for some reason she couldn't get it and had to go with a 95 stratus, in fact the stratus has some mods that yours does, but only 1 or 2, they had to take off the racing exhaust in order to sell it. hope you enjoy your lotus!

trolls are on every board and hopefully he'll jsut go away...

i have an Alfa Romeo and am close friends with the son (Todd -now of Lotus of America Norcross, Ga.) of the owner of Paul Spruell Alfa Romeo, Lotus, lamborghini (thats why my car is painted a lotus limited edition color) the 88-93s can be problematic, head warping, and minor electrical problems.. however. if you find an S, SE, Commereative (White with blue grey interior) or Jim Clark edition they are intercooled or any newer than may of 93 they won't have head warping issues. all are beautiful cars and handle like a dream, comfortable and not NEARLY as small as you'd think. they have more leg room than my Fiero.. less front trunk space but more in the back. check with www.paulspruell.com or go pick up a hemmenings motor news, or DuPont registery magazine.

I have an '88 Esprit, and although they are not extremly reliable, practical cars, they are worth the time and effort of running them. i think that despite these problems, they are very good sports cars.

MaximumBrian has issues that should be dealt with by a counsellor,

Name: Maximum Brian
Problem: Anger for the world
Solution: Anger managment (for an extreme case, this might not work or have a lasting effect - Refer to glossary 844 medical Journals, 1987)
Comments: These problems were first highlighted when he started "having a go" at a person on a automotive forum, despite the fact he did not know the person, or was willing to answer the real questions asked by this person about ther subject.
