3.42 VS. 3.73 Gearing Questions:
I have always been curious as to what the real differences are between them.
What the time difference between the two 0-60 & quarter mile times & MPH? I know the 3.73 is faster, but by how much? How about 60MPH cruising? Whats the RPM difference? The 3.42 will be at a lower RPM, but by how much? Actual MPG between the 2? The 3.42 should get you better MPG, but really in everyday driving, just how much more? Does anyone have this information as I am really curious. I have already owned a 89, 95, 96, 97, 98 and a 2003 Blazer/ TrailBlazer & only the 97 had a 3.42 which I could tell the difference from the 3.73. Slower acceleration, but nothing really noticeable in the MPG as either gearing was dismal. Reason for mentioning this is that more than likely, my next vehicle will be yet another TrailBlazer or whatever they call it down the road. I have just been satisfied with them. I just want to know if it is really worth the extra $$$$ (though not much extra) to opt for the higher gearing in the future or should I just stick with the standard gearing? Thank you to all that can help me on this question. As I said, it is just something that has been bugging me for quite some time.

If both engines perform equally, the '73 gears will give you about .1 sec 0-60 over the 3.42. It will be a lot better towing with the 3.73 if the load is heavy. Engine performance is so variable on mass produced vehicles that a givin truck with 3.42 gears could out perform one with 3.73's. There is no pat answer to your question. All you can do is assume equal performance and get the gear that suits your needs.

Randy W:
Thank you for the info. I just didn't know if there was any factual answers for my question. It's just something that has boggled my mind for a while. I never knew if there would be "that" much of a diff. or not.

Re: 3.42 VS. 3.73 Gearing Questions:
I have the I6 with 3:73's. On the highway I have the cruise set at 130K (81mph) and the tach rests at 2250 RPM's. I forgot to check what it sits at going 60. I average ~16-17mpg. Only mod is a AIRAID CAI. This doesn't answer much of your question but gives a little info to compare.
