pull off your intake hose from your throttle body and you will see the thermostat housing. The housing has the cap on top that says "Caution Hot: Do not open while engine is warm" or something like that.

The thermostat is in the oval shaped housing that has a radiator hose hooked to it. It is held in by 3 bolts, 12 mm if i remember correctly. Undo the 3 bolts and the housing comes off. If it still has liquid gasket on the housing, then you might need to lightly tap it with a hammer to break it loose, and yes coolant will be coming out.

Now, if your not sure whether or not its your thermostat locked up or your waterpump has gone bad, just leave the thermostat out, and put it back together. All a thermostat does is help heat your engine up to normal temps faster and then opens up so coolant can get to the radiator and keep things cool. If it locks up then you will have a heating problem. Without the thermostat, if your temps are ok after driving for a bit, then its your thermostat, but if your still overheating then its your water pump.

As far as replacing the thermostat, you can just get a replacement at your local auto store, along with the actual thermostat gasket. The gasket just snaps on the outside of the thermostat and then you just place it back into the housing. Now, i will recommend using some sort of silicon gasketmaker when you bolt the housing cover back on to assure that coolant doesn't leak back out through there.
