automatic transmission fluid change

I'm going to change my auto transmission fluid this saturday. I have never done it before. I have a 98 cherokee sport, i6, 4.0L. HOw much fluid do I need? Is there a brand that people would recommend. I have 91,000 miles on it. I'm not topping it off, i'm going to completely drain it and refill. I don't have a manual, and can never seem to get to the dealer when it is open, since I go to school full time. Any help would be appreciated. Also, is there a filter that needs to be changed, or no? I'm not to mechanically inclined, but can do basic maintence on my Jeep. Again, thanx.

Re: automatic transmission fluid change

hey sklater...........

First rule of Jeep ownership----- Get a manual.

Wouldn't have a doc remove your 'pendics without him studying the manual first would ya??

I don't think it necessary to do a full change as it is not possible to drain the torque converter. Do change the filter though.

The transmission (AW4) holds a total of 8.5 qts but if you have 3 to 4 qts on hand that will more than replace what you drain when you remove the pan.

Some on here have indicated a high level of difficulty in removing the dipstick tube from the side of the pan and suggest you try the dealer to have them do the dirty work the first time.

Any mercon compatible ATF will work with your transmission. You might consider a synthetic ATF like Mobil 1 or Amsoil even for a part change. I believe it is worth the extra $$.

Have a look at the other tranny fluid threads for some ideas on transmission fluid change strategies too and feel free to ask any other questions that come to mind.
