Question 2002 wiring for trailer towing

Have a 2002 sport bought without hitch & wire hook up. Part of the purchase deal I was able to take the hitch and wiring plug off 2001 sport.
#1 Took the hitch off 2001 but was not able to get some of the bolts out of frame. Can I buy a mounting kit for this hitch? I think it was a ford hitch mounted by ford dealer.
#2 On the 2001 there was a wiring harness coming out of floor passenger side rear. It had a connection to 4 wire plug for a trailer plug. When I got to my 2002 sport there was no wiring harness coming out of floor, there was a rubber grommet in the floor where the harness could come out. Will the wiring harness that came through the floor on the 2001 sport work on my 2002.How do I remove the connector from the 2001?

Re: 2002 wiring for trailer towing

1. You may want to carry your bolt question to a local trailer supplier if there is one in your area. Did your 2002 have the holes already in the frame for the bolts? If so, you're lucky ... I had to drill 1/2" holes in my frame... good way to break a wrist. Be sure to use hi-strength bolts.

2. Keep in mind that Windstars come with positive voltage being fed constantly to exterior lights. The switching is done on the negative side. (Don't know if all earlier Winnies came this way... but yours is). In Ford's trailer tow package, there is a trailer tow module that reverses this switching scheme around for the trailer. Included in this tow package is a drawing that shows all the connections. If you can get the module (and drawing/sketch) from the 2001, you will be well ahead.

If not, start off by trying to get tow-package hook-up sketch from dealer. I had the drawing for my '99 .. but have misplaced it.. perhaps someone else can post the drawing number so you will have a head start.

I have 2 more holes to driil. The frame has 4 of the 6 holes in it.

Where in the van does this trailer tow module plug in. How do you get the rear passenger side panel off (where the jack is). I think I need to get this panel off and plug tow module in there to the wire harness and run it thru the floor is this correct.
Thanks

Re: 2002 wiring for trailer towing

You are in the right area. I've never had the lower right rear panel off myself.. but would expect the module to be in there. Hopefully all body harnesses come with the connector for attaching the module.

There use to be some good info on trailers in "cartrackers.com", but I can no longer open this site. The site may be gone for good.

Re: Re: 2002 wiring for trailer towing

Hello I have a 2001 SEL and having a problem finding someone at Ford to tell me about the tow module. What does it look like, how much, and how to install. Can you help me?

Dan

Re: 2002 wiring for trailer towing

If you van came equipped with the trailer towing package, you should be equipped with the wiring harness to the rear of the vehicle, as well as a built in tranny cooler.

If not, it'll be a little more of a pain in the rear to get your van wired up. also, if you're planning on doing alot of towing, it would be in your best interest to install a tranny cooler. the windstar transmissions and high heat do not go well together
