Help PLz gear problem.

I have never for some reason looked at my hand to see what gear i was shifting into , i would always look at the dashboard to see the gear, well today i was looking and when i shift into D my dash board gear said that i was in N? So when i shift into D4 i was in D. So is there a way to fix this? CAn i move the plastic piece so that my gear line up correctly. It's a 2000 328i with 82k so it's out warranty didn't notice it until today. for some wierd reason.
