Save Enterprise!

Go to SaveEnterprise.com

We must work to save Star Trek: Enterprise! The show is now cancelled on UPN following the end of this 4th season. Apparently the ratings weren't what the network wanted to see... but you can bet your ass they'll be making up the slack with something they figure will work for them -- if you said "Why Jeff, are you suggesting that a TV station will probably pursue yet another shitty Reality TV show in an effort to improve viewership?" -- then you my friend would be correct. Apparently shows that tackle relevant issues of morals, society, science, imagination and diplomacy aren't what the masses want. Nope, sorry -- the masses demand idiotic, mindless drivel where gays and straights mingle in stupid, hairbrained makeover schemes, airheads marry strangers, families are taken advantage of for ratings, and shows that involve the same boring, repetitive, brain-rotting situations (like stranding people on islands, or looking for the next empty, record industry cashcow) take centerstage. Hell, at least many popular spots during the gameshow craze (Millionaire, Weakest Link etc.) involved THINKING to some degree on trivia questions.

Anywho, before my rant about the mind-numbing crap now popular (on what is actually a mind-numbing medium itself -- TV) gets too out of hand, I'll just sum up my point by asking again, anyone who cares for TV shows that still have great merit too them, should at least show their support for shows like Enterprise, who stand to be gobbled up and replaced by some idiotic show involving a bunch of fake-tittied skanks, braindead "dudes," and the business tycoons who like to stir up conflict and anger between them for fun and profit.

That or just pick up a book. Oh yeah, that's right, books are like kryptonite to today's youth.

Yeah yeah, I get ya. The Star Trek world definately isn't for everyone. But those of us who are into it really dig the franchise. Funny though it may be, 30+ years, 10 movies, 5 television incarnations spanning some 20+ years of syndication, and conventions dedicated to the continued growth of the Star Trek universe speak volumes of it all. Which is why common sense says that obviously there's no threat to the franchise waning anytime in the near future. But it's the principle of the cancellation thing that is frustrating. I suppose what it comes down to, is the fact that eventually this dumb Reality TV crap will become so ridiculously played-out and repetitous that it'll just fold, pompous suits waging shallow battles against each other for boardroom supremacy will lose its luster, American Idol will follow the same path that Star Search did, and the masses will move on to the next popular trough. But as much as people will make fun of it, Star Trek will always be there. Books, TV, movies, toys, video games, conventions the world around, and the Vulcan Nerve Pinch -- face it, Star Trek is part of history.
