can turbo heat crack CF hoods?
I was looking on ebay and I found a used carbon fiber EvoIII hood with pics. Used, in ok condition, $300. They guy says it looks perfect, but there is a hairline fracture on the hood due to the heat his turbo generated. I am innterested because the hood is only 40 miles from where I live (save the insane $150 shipping).
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...category=33646 How much of a effect does the turbo heat have on these hoods? I have never really thought of that. There are brand new invader and other hoods that this guy sells in LA for $385 out the door, BUT its 150 miles north of me. Should I go for the hood, wait, or just forget carbon fiber hoods all together if they are bad with turbos? |

It depends on your setup, how big and how close your turbo is to the hood. If you're using a stock turbo (concidering the fact that I'm picturing exactly where it is) there should be no problem at all. Now, I've never heard of anyone cracking their CF hood around my way with a 16G & under. Another thing to help with heat is a turbo wrap. Yes I know.. they look like something on a space shuttle but it keeps the heat out of your engine bay a long with using the heat tape on your header. Trust me bro, you'll be fine. I dont think anyone will disagree with me on this one.

Re: can turbo heat crack CF hoods?
Well, this is going to sound incredibly stupid, but the turbo I have is a "modified" T-25. The shop guys custom made it. It spools at 4K and pulls rediculously hard (though the lack of a larger exhaust noticibley chokes it at higher RPM), and uses the T-25 housing. Could be a T-28, not sure. But yeah, basically, its no 20-G, if thats what you mean. And the heat wrap... can it actually withstand the heat of the turbo??

Re: can turbo heat crack CF hoods?
I am not using any type of heat sheild. I am also using a Vis hood, and it's held up nicely. Has pulled away slighty by the valve cover though.
