pwr steering flush

My fluid looks to be original on my 01 Galant. How hard is it to flush the unit, and any recommendations on regular or synthetic replacements?? Thanks.

Re: pwr steering flush

Ok.............. nobody ever responded to my question so I'll just post what I did , whether it's right or wrong!!!!

I removed the 2 bolts holding the reservoir to the fenderwell, then lifted reservoir up so to turn it over and dump the old fluid into a tub (left the flexible rubber hoses connected by the way). Only about 1/2 a quart came out, so then I propped it upside down and propped the bucket underneath. Then I started the car, but only let it run for 2-3 seconds!! I did this about 5 times total over a period of a minute. My thinking was that it is not very good to run the pump without fluid, but I needed to purge out more fluid from all of the pressure lines. I'm not to worried about this, as the pump never once made a droning noise, and it really never got a chance to get spinning long before I shut down each time.

**I was surprised that I only extracted about 3/4 of a quart of used fluid total.

I then bolted the reservoir back up, added 3/4 of a quart of Dexron III fluid, started the vehicle, jacked up the front wheels far enough to move the steering wheel side to side so as to bleed the air out of the system. I also let it run for about 10-15 minutes to make sure fluid was up to temp and proper level.

I also double checked the fluid after driving about 60 miles. The fluid is still clean as a whistle and steering seems to have slightly less resistence now.

There is proably an easier way to drain the fluid out out of the system, but oh well.
