knocking noise

My 1991 300E has developed a ticking or dull ?knocking? noise above 15 mph. It increases with engine speed but does not develop until 1200rpm or approximately 15 - 18 mph. No noise at idle and goes away below 15 mph. Am I looking at a possible engine problem here or can it originate from another source?
