Question turbo first or intercooler first?

I want to get some new turbos, first of all
1)what brand and should I go with 13g or 15g then
2)do i need to get aftermarked side mounts before i get turbos or can the stock side mounts handle 13 or 15g turboz.
3)Also do i need to rebulit my engine before I get upgraded turboz?
4)How high can i turn up the psi with out rebuilt engine and how high with rebulit engine?

THX

Re: turbo first or intercooler first?

1) I say go big or go home, so I would go with 15g's
2) the stock IC's will work, but upgraded is always better
3) No you dont need to reuild it
4) It all depends on tuning. You can blow your engine at low boost if tuned incorrectly, but some people run 30+ psi on the stock bottom end.

first of all, tuning does not equal modding. most modding requires tuning. Tuning in this case deals with getting the engine running smoothly with an upgraded turbo setup. its easy to slap on turbos then upgrade your fuel and air, but you need to tune the air/fuel ratio, boost pressure, and perhaps the fuel curves to efficiently and effectively bring out all the power that lies in your turbo upgrades. for some people, tuning is a hit-and-miss operation, but you need to know what you're doing and what you're getting into before you do this. and perhaps knowing someone with tuning experience would be a good idea. probably the best way to tune is on a dyno, but even that comes with a price tag. with the suspension tuning that i have done...i prefer the road test

Re: turbo first or intercooler first?

do i need to upgrade my ECU to let me tune my car or is it possible to just do it with like Apexi AFC-II? And let say if i take it to dyno, dose the guy that tunes my car, dose he have to know about my car or anybody that just knows about tuning a turbo car can do a good job?
Also what kind of turboz should I go with?
DR500 or 13G
DR650s or 15G, But when i looked at the two, u cant really compare them because DR650s are about $600 more expensive? But for the money which on is better and U think its better to just by 15G or wait and save up money and get the DR650s, is there that much difference?

Adding a "Step 0" to your mod path:

0. RESEARCH and do preventative maintainance. You aren't ready for the upgrade yet judging by your posts.

Re: turbo first or intercooler first?

Ok, first off, they are right, before you make a purchase, you better do a ton of reading. 2ndly, what turbo you get Dr500, 13G, 15G, or Dr650s really depends on what your goals are. There are plenty of threads on 3si that compare all of these turbos. And don't shy away from long threads, read them all, because they have the most info.

For instance:
http://www.3si.org/forum/showthread.php?t=253273

http://www.3si.org/forum/showthread....ight=dr500+13g

http://www.3si.org/forum/showthread....ight=dr500+13g

http://www.3si.org/forum/showthread....ight=dr500+13g

Now with any turbo upgrade you NEED the following:
(and before someone argues, yes I know that a select few combinations do not require all of these things, but I'm not getting into that)

1: New fuel pump
2. New injectors
3. A/F controller
4. datalogger
5. and depending on how big you are going, you may need/want more electronic piggybacks for tuning.

Tuning is using the datalogger or whatever scanning equipment you have, and then varying your air/fuel trims, possibly timing, and such with your piggyback systems. You could get a new standalone ECU, like AEM EMS, but these run in the thousands and many just go with a bunch of piggybacks instead.

Now I SERIOUSLY suggest you get on 3si, and just start reading and reading. Read others experiences, recommendations, problems they ran into. Read everything about anything. This is how you learn, and how you can effectively decide what is best for you.
Anyone can tell you the basic first mods and what boost settings to run with them, but once you start doing more than basic bolt-ons, and decide to upgrade fuel and/or turbos, everything becomes VERY VERY specific to your car alone, and you need to know what you are doing, or you can kiss your engine goodbye.

Re: turbo first or intercooler first?

get the 15g's, get a fuel controller, supra pump, 660cc injectors, and you can run 20 psi.
