89 4x4 problems

i have a 89 s-10 4x4 4.3l tbi. my 4x4 seems to be shifting really hard when i shift out of 4x4. I have to drive backwards and hit the breaks to make the 4x4 lights turn off and when i do this it makes a thud sound under the truck and when its in 4x4 it feels like its harder to get up to speed almost like its dragging but when i get stuck in the snow i can tell that the 4x4 works it just feels like its dragging. when i drive about 20-40mph. the balljoints and driver side axil are new what do you guys think. im preaty shure its not a vaccume leak maybe the front diff is low what do you think would cause my truck to act like this

I had a 89' blazer.
There is a vaccume controlled diaphram that pulls a cable that
engauges the front differential.(it's inder the battery)
Make sure it's getting pulled in all the way.
THe 4 wheel drive "engauged" light goes on when this cable pulls in and engauges the front transaxle.
The vaccume line to this (if I remember right) comes from
a small manifold at the top of the transfer case.
When you pull the lever to engauge the transfercase you are
also opening a valve that let's vaccume goto the diaphram.

Those are the only simple fixes I know.....

Don't assume anything is ok, go out and check it for yourself.

Also, use the serach feature and look at all the other 4x4 problem posts for a solution.

This has been covered many times.

Re: 89 4x4 problems

The extra ATF in your transfer case is coming from the automatic transmission, the seals that separate
the 2 are leaking.
Check your fluid level in your tranny.

You will have to drop the transfer case and replace
the front seal.
I had to do the same thing in my old 89' blazer...

You'll be able to check those vaccume hoses on top of the transfer case for clogs as well...

What you are seeing is a slight leakage between your transfer case and transmission seal.

Pretty normal and you shouldn't worry about it much.

Mine was the same on my 1995 and since changing the transfer case fluid and the transmission fluid (both of which are transmission fluid), nothing has leaked since.

When you replace the fluids, the new fluids and additive will reswell the seals again and basically correct the problem itself.

You are sure that the tranny is full?

How about starting the truck and checking it out for yourself instead of "assuming" things.
