Rough Idle, rough accelleration, CEL

Just bought a used 99 Eddie Bauer Expedtion 4x4 with 5.4 L and 94000 miles. The truck is idleing a little rough, jerking while accellerating and check engine light comes on every other day. When it is running rough on accelleration and I give it more gas the Check engine light flashes. Has anyone successfully found out what was wrong with autozone or etc. I was going to have them check it. On a tight budget!

Re: Rough Idle, rough accelleration, CEL

Not sure if you have found your problem. But I have a 99 exp as well. I found that the coil on cylinder 4 was defective. It would do the same thing. There is a known problem with water leaking in on this coil and causing it to go bad. Mine just started doing this again this week. I replaced the coil about 18 months ago and the same one is bad again. Cost of the coil from Ford is around $130. You can buy one from a parts store for around $60 with a one year warrenty. Unfortuantely this is very hard to get to. I was unable to replace myself due to the location.

Unhappy sputtering and surging

i have a 2002 harley davidson f150 with a new motor, cost me 400 for the built block alone, i aam havin this same problem, and checkengine light flashes when drivin, but also goes out sometimes too, it skipps in every gear not as bad in park and neutral though, my dealer i worked at told swares up and down that it is the torque converter, so i ordered a high performance one for like 1000 dollars, no i saw your thread and are not sure what it is now, i just dont wanna keep replacing those coils, its ever had a check engine light wheni was at the dealer, now it does and it halfway across town, gott get the pos towed now, yo think it would be ok to drive it to the dealer, mine also started just doin the on ful and light acceleration in 4th gear only, one day it got really bad in all gears including park, it then went away for about a week, then all hell broke looose again and the engine light flashes and i dont thinks its gonna go away again, any anwers to this problem would be greatly appreciated, i just wanna solve this problem im already out 400 for the motor and 1000 for the converter, and im not a rich guy, just one of those idiots that spend all his paycheck on his car lol

Sorry for the delay, not been on in a while. Coil number four is the rear passenger side coil. Lots of fun to reach.

Re: Rough Idle, rough accelleration, CEL

Sorry to jump in here, but sounded like my problem: My 97 Expy had the same problem with #4 plug wire was bad, replaced it, worked great until I disconnected the battery to clear the computer codes and now my Expy only runs for 2-3 seconds.
What's up with that? Can someone help?

Hello All,
Just got back from the Ford dealer and here is what they found:

The wire harness to the security module was not connected.

Funny thing I never went under the dash.

We have owned this Expy for 3.5 years and it has never been connected.
I can say that because now we have a "Thief" light on the dash panel right below the 3 on the tac that lights up red when the security system is tripped.

Who knows why the truck was working for so long. Maybe something to do with the battery being disconnected.

It cost me $118 for the labor and no parts needed.
