emission legal exhaust
I was planing on getting the Ko racing exhaust but it is not emission legal. What would be my best choice as a catback system for under $550 that is emission legal. I was looking at the apexi n'1 but im not sure if that is even legal, and the hks turbo. Any recomendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Re: emission legal exhaust
technically, any exhaust system that removes one or both catalytic converters is not "emissions legal". if you really want to stay legal all year round, your best bet is to get a secondary cat back muffler, like the greddy sp, fujitsubo legalis r, or marcor genie. there may be others out there.
you won't see much power gains with these units, however, as the cats are the primary restrictions in the exhaust flow. most people have been able to pass emissions inspections with just the primary cat, so a primary catback exhaust system may be what you are looking for. in this case, the KO racing exhaust fits the bill, as it bolts up to the stock cat/turbo elbow.

this may be your answer, im looking into the same idea, and as you asked before the Apex'i N1 is no good for emissions. I currently have one. What i plan to do is to get an emmisions legal cat back but do an exhaust cut-out ( or exhaust bypass). You'll have to find someone that can customize the cut out for you and set up an indash switch that opens and closes the valve. Ive seen this done on many cars and belive me they sound SICK. This way you can go to an emmisions test with near stock exhaust and still be able to haul ass on the way home
. Im not sure if this system matters too much for the mr2 since there isnt too much piping to begin with, or have i seen one being done on a mr2, but when i find out ill let you know.

http://www.chicoraceworks.com/gallery/album11/IMG_0071 -- this was 3" piping with cut out and had a 3" high flow cat and a GReddy SP cat back could put an electronic valve there no prob and go straight pipe
