Flashing Control Gauge Lights, S-10

I have a 1998 S-10 with a repeatly intermittent problem. The instrument panel's control/gauge lights all flash ON for a few seconds and then return to normal. The gauge needles die too. The mechanic checked the charging system, and its OK. The engine light was ON, so he fixed everything to make it go off.
Great, but the control panel lights still flash occasionally. Can it simply be a short somewhere? I've never had this problem w/ any other car I've owned. The alternator was replaced 4 months ago, and had no effect on this problem.

Had the same thing happen to my truck 01 zr2.. I was driving down the road and continuely all lights woudl come on and gages woudl drop to zero.. Mine was an easy fix.. and this is where id start with yours.. Look at your battery.. Check the positive and negative cables.. mine was very badly corroded.. (spelling?).. if either one looks like they are.. clean them both up.. dissolve the errosion with backin soda and water.. wash everything down pretty well.. becarefull not to spray water into the tub thats right next to the battery.. i did.. and messed up somethin else.. (seconddary air pollution pump.. im still workin on gettni that fixed.) on my truck it was the positvie cable.. and i cleaned up up.. and as i was tighting the battery back up.. the battery connection broke right off the battery.. so i had to replace the battery.. and after that.. everything fine.. if this doesn't fix it.. you get to have fun and trace your negative and positive cables.. theres prolly a short somewhere.. find it.. and fix it..
