MPG reading

I have a 2000 jetta vr6 gls and it has a little read out thing that tells you how your gas milage is doing. recently I had to get a new battery because the old one just kinda died on me, and the gas milage reading is kinda messed up because it used to just give me an average and not change too much and now it changes all the time like when I am costing down a hill or something it will tell me 200 mpg then when I areach the bottum and give it some gas to get up the next hill it tells me 20 mpg or something..

I am not saying the readings are wrong because I could see myself getting 200 mpg if all I ever did was coast down a hill but can anyone offer any suggestions as to why it is jumping around so much as apposed to before when it just gave me an average of how it was doing?

thanks

Re: MPG reading

There are different modes you can get the readout to display, actual live (which you are now in) and average (which you were in). It explains how to operate it in the manual if you have it.

toggle switch under right hand stalk changes mode . Mode 1 is current mpg average mpg shown by circle with line through average speed shown by circle through both signified by number 1 on display to change mode go to average speed or average mpg and press toggle this changes to mode 2 and shows above mph and mpg for the total journeys up to 99hours and 9999 miles to reset either mode go to either average and keep toggle depressed for about 2 seconds mode 1 automatically resets after about 2 hours with engine off best wishes Taff
