b16 Pistons and rods in b18 block

My friend has a b16 block laying in his basement. I was wondering if taking out the pistons and rods and putting them in my b18 LS if it would be a good set up to do an LS/Vtec.

Stock B16 Rods: 5.290"
Stock B18B Rods: 5.394"

Rods don't work. Pistons will swap over and will net higher compression.

I need an opinion on LS/Vtec. All my friends say no matter what Ls/vtec will never work good. You will always be switchin blocks or blowing rods and what not. Even if its built he says it will never last longer then 2 months. Is this tru? I mean lots of people got Ls/Vtecs out there now. Do they go through the trouble of blowing it up all the time. Or is it just Bs Ls/Vtec can work good?

Re: b16 Pistons and rods in b18 block

If it's built correctly, and you don't over rev the motor, it can be pretty reliable. Just remember that you'll be running the ECU for the head, and this will have a much higher rev limiter than the LS one does. But unless you're block is built to rev high, then you can't rev the motor as high as the ECU will allow. So if you over rev it, you'll break rods and/or throw a piston thru your sleeves.

Whats a basic shift for ls/v also like a red line.

Re: b16 Pistons and rods in b18 block

what ever the ecu says it is.

the most important things when doing a ls vtec if your leaving the block stock, is new arp rod bolts and a vtec oil pump

Need a block girdle too. That will help make the whole bottomend more rigid. You can use one from a GSR or ITR, you will need the oil pan, girdle, main caps, windage tray, and oil pick up. Or you can get an aftermarket one from Z10

Re: b16 Pistons and rods in b18 block

Is there a lot of drilling when doing a LS/Vtec?
(just curious)...

nope, all you gotta do is drill the head once, tap it and then plug it

all those people who blew their ls/vtecs within two months obviously cant drive or dont know how to build a motor. one of the things you cant really do with a stock-bottom ls/vtec is rev high, why? the rod-angle puts alot of stress on the rods, revving higher then they were intended for will break/bend the rods.
Do what everyone says above and you will have no problems.

I and several people I know have ZERO problems revving LS/B20 VTEC motors high. The rod/stroke issue is blown way out of proportion. The LS/B20 is 1.54:1, the GSR/ITR is 1.58:1. Not that big of a difference, and it doesn't make a huge difference anyways.

Re: b16 Pistons and rods in b18 block

yes there are people that can get a ls/b20 to rev high, but the fact that revs cause a engine to wear faster makes it more noticeable in a ls/b20; which wasnt designed to turn high rpms without work.

it doesnt matter if the numbers arent that close, fact is the rods/rod bolts will see a higher load then the gsr.
