Question Changing shifter knob

Hey there...just wondering if anybody out there can help me out. I drive a 2000 sunfire GT standard. I'm looking to change my shifter knob but it has this stupid little thing on the stick where I have to lift it up to put it in reverse, now what I need to know is 1) can I remove that thing on the stick without it affecting the rest of the car and 2) how do i unscrew or take off the knob.
thank you.

Re: Changing shifter knob

Normally there's a little U-clip at the front of the shifter knob that you can remove to release it. You just need a flathead screwdriver to get it out. I'm not sure if it's the same with the newer getrag transmissions, but on my older one it was just that one clip.
