Impreza WRC 1998 Monte Carlo

This is my second build in years. After the success of the Modena, I've started to build a WRC Impreza..!! This is the progress so far.

Start of Project - Building the night WRC version -

This is how it now looks after a lot of work, not looking too bad considering this is the second car I've built for a long time.

Close up of body - Still need to clear coat and then polish. It's a lovely colour. I'm sure many are bored of seeing WRC Impreza's, and this isn't anywhere near as good as the impreza Hiroboy is building..!!

I still can't take pictures - the above photos are garbage..!! The car looks so much better then the photo's show. It's a lot shinner then what is being seen here.. Oh well..!!

The color looks nice, the rims match the car color wich is cool in some way. I can't find a reason to find this project not interesting

Good luck with your build, the first WRC imprezza is still the best IMHO. Why did you paint the chassis silver, or is it just an undercoat for the metallic blue?

EDIT: Just noticed the rear wing is silver too, so it must be an undercoat.

The silver is a basecoat for the Mica Blue, however the rear wing you have spotted is actually now back in pieces.. I put the rear wing together only to then do one final test fit before I final coated with blue, and it doesn’t fit.

Somehow I’ve managed to build it with glue to find the rear drop downs are bent, and it doesn’t fit. I don’t know if I can fix it. The glue joint broke, but it was very clean, and now it looks a total mess.

Looks like I might have to look on eBay for a cheap replacement kit, to do some kit bashing if I can’t glue the rear wing back together. Thought about using tape to hold in place in the car and then glue and putty to join it. Then sand smooth.. If this doesn’t work, then it’s off to find a replacement kit.

Put that down to a learning curve. NEVER glue body parts without first properly test fitting..!! Even more so if the body parts are to be glue on later after you have painted the body..!!

Re: Impreza WRC 1998 Monte Carlo

Looks like you'll have to pick up a second Impreza and make a resin copy of that wing for this car. The only problem is now you have anoher Impreza to build: Oh well..........

Updated picture. Got the engine installed (what bit there is - it's curbside) and detailed the under chassis. Made a mess of the masking, so had to do some areas again..

Got the front nearly built, waiting for it all to dry then I'll get on with the back. Oh - fixed the rear wring, just needs sanding, priming and then top coatng.. That was lucky..!! Also excuse the over exposed picutre, it's an indoor pic, it's too cold and dark outside. It's actually snowing at the moment..!!

At a glance it looks like you've got the front shocks the wrong way round?

Oh no..!! How can you tell? I followed the guide and looked at the pictures to make sure I installed them correctly. I've just re-checked, and I can't see where I've gone wrong..

I've now found the kit on ebay, and I'm about to bid on it for spare parts. I've lost and broken too much now, so can't get away with it. I need a decal for a wheel (again - what is it with me and wheel decals) and I would like the rear wing again, plus I broke the steering rod.

Oh well.. It's all a learning curve - expensive but I'm learning..

Re: Impreza WRC 1998 Monte Carlo

Well, the steering rod you can repair yourself, or make a new one out of styrene rod. For the wing, be a shame to just use a new kit for the wing alone: See if you can find somebody to make a resin copy of it for you, so you can still build the other kit.

Or if you can find one, the Revell-Monogram Acura Integra Type R has some extra wings in the kit that might work as suitable substitutes if you aren't a stickler for super accuracy (Or are building a custom version). One looks just like the 'smaller' wing I have seen on a lot of non-factory Impreza rally cars.

Re: Impreza WRC 1998 Monte Carlo

I could resin cast a wing easily enough, I'm working on some molds this weekend so I could be added to the list.

As to the steering rod, I do have one here Mickbench, PM your postal address and I can send it over to you,

I've done some more on the almost now ill fated Impreza. I'm not very happy with this one, as it's one of my favorite cars. But somehow I've managed to ruin a great WRC rally car.. So I will say sorry for all those who love the WRC rally car for wrecking a superb 1998 WRC rally car.. Anyhow, here is a pic. The clear coat when so wrong that you can see spots of white /silver around the edges. I used a brush to paint the window frames - but the masking tape LEAKED AGAIN.!! I seem to have a VERY dull spot in the roof..!! No decal goes there. So all in all pretty rubbish really. But still I'll keep building it, but my moral is a little low at the moment..!!

Also sorry for rambling on..!! Just need to vent a little frustration somewhere. Thanks for looking and reading..!!

Re: Impreza WRC 1998 Monte Carlo

Welcome to car modeling LOL. Bet your next one turns out awesome, and the one after that stinks again. Happens to us all.

This model doesn't have to be a write off: You could strip it and repaint the body, or try polishing the clear coat.

What kind of tape are you using, and how are you using it? If you cut a clean edge with a new blade, and burnish the edge of the tape down, that should minimize the edges leaking.
