camshaft question

im going to replace my stock camshafts with stage 1 camshafts and was wondering while im in the process wat other mods should i do? i heard that replacing the valve springs would be a good idea since that part of the engine is taken off anyways, but i was wondering what else there is to do? im trying to keep it uder $1000 if I can so companyies and hp gains would also be helpful.

Re: camshaft question

get yourself some adjustable cam gears. you can also get yourself a new spoon gasket while you're at it.

valve springs will only mess up your cam lobes sooner. got any big wings at your back yet? how about body kit and stickers?

Re: camshaft question

i think im just gonna stick with getting the valve springs and retainers while im doing a stage 1 or stage 2 camshaft intallation, as well as adjustable cam gears from AEM. im thinking this will be about 700 ( i dont know how much titanium retainers are so i guessed around 100) if anyone thinks differently or can help me cheapen that up a bit let me know.

Re: camshaft question

i would suggest you pay for what you get. so as long as you're doing that, you may as well pay for quality IMO. go for the higher end products like jun, skunk or crower. never heard anything all that positive about anythign from OBX.

I would recommend against stage 2 unless you're building your internals and raising your compression. Stage 2's aren't any good below 6000 rpm.

Re: camshaft question

oh ok thanks for that info i was going to build my internals for an upcoming turbo but not at the expense of not having as much power below 6000. by the way i heard that valve springs raise your redline? is this true? if so by how many rpms to be safe? im gettting high quality springs and hopefully titanium retainers.

Re: camshaft question

Valve springs make it possible to rev your engine higher without floating the valves, but your hp and torque will still peak at the same rpm. That means you won't be making any more power just by revving higher - you gotta build the pistons and cams and the rest to make more hp.

it all comes with tuning, my friend. if you can increase airflow by porting and polishing your head, porting your intake manifold, tuning the cams, proper exhaust tuning, etc - you can prolly get your torque higher which will in turn raise your HP, because we all know torque is more important than HP. Thats why they call us tuners. we don't just slap a huge blower on a V8 and make everything bigger just to get more power. They say that there is no replacement for displacement... yah right. its called technology. Then again - you can install fuel injection on a V8, give it some kind of VTEC or something... but that would cost way too much and not be practical for street use. I love watching civics beat mustangs and the civic gets twice the gas mileage. it makes me laugh so hard.

I was just wondering but does anyone know what RPM ranges the Stage II and Turbo cams from Skunk2 are designed for?
