i think my cars broke

82 trans am with that motor down there. As its cranking its a lot harder to start than im used to.And as its cranking its making a thumping sort of knock i can hear plain as day through the exhaust and the torque converter or back of the crank sounds pretty knocky too.It goes through the whole motor and entire car I can even feel it knocking in the steering wheel perfectly following the rotation speed of the starter before the motor even starts. It starts up and acts like it has to clear it throat .I can slap my hand on the dash and just about follow the miss perfectly at idle. Not only a miss, but a knock .One that follows the speed of the crankshaft at whatever rpm.If i put it in first and run it up to 2,000 rpm's its steady but has a knock miss thing goin on and isnt as strong. The knock goes away at about 5krpm and turns into what sounds like a backfire but also feels like a piston is slapping the head or maybe a explosion or somthin. It dont peel out like it used to.It even makes a squeekin noise from inside the motor at idle that follows the speed of the crankshaft rotation.

I dont think this is a good sign.I just put that motor in.It either spun a bearing or a wrist pin or a ring broke i dunno. Its obviously coming back out of the car.

Re: i think my cars broke

well... you said you feel the vibration even when it's in neutral or park, so that eliminates the driveshaft or transmission. the problem is obvious with the rotating mass. This could also mean some odd flywheel problem too (not likely though). I would check the valvetrain first, then go to the internal parts if you don't find anything. That's gonna be a pain in the ass.... sorry to hear that.

Re: i think my cars broke

Man i wish it was in the transmission or somthing i dont even want to look. But dont feel bad i did it to it myself probably. Its been ran pretty hard and its been acting funny for a bit since i put it in really. But the motor always ran strong so i left it alone.I should have made a poll is it in the piston or wrist pin or a rod or main bearings or rod bearings.Im not pulling the motor out right away its going to have to sit for a bit.I was still trying to make it street legal by putting full exhaust on it.

I figured that engine would do that sooner or later.I have a 400 pontiac motor i just got i could put in it.Ive been planning on putting the 400 in it really, but ive been putting it off and not wanting to mess with it.I just got a new hood and for the 400 to go into the car i have to cut the hood up.Looks like im going to be driving the crown vic longer than i thought.Oh well the crown vic hauls ass too ive kinda grown to like it.When im in my firebird everybody goes 80 mph on the highway. When im in the crown vic everybody on the highway is doin like 60-65 mph.It never fails

Re: i think my cars broke

wait a minute, you said yoyr car had a motor, but later in the post you mentioned exaust and pistons. COrrect me if im wrong, but motors dont have pistons and i guess air could be exaust, but motors run on brushes (well, i know small ones do, i dont know about the ones they put in cars)

Re: i think my cars broke

Nah im not annoyed and i wasnt really happy with how the motor turned out anyways. I find it interesting what engine means really.Looks to me like if you say in a sentance or conversation"have you seen my engine",you could be using it by definition 1 you may be askingin an old school sort of way"have you seen my locomotive of horror and pain".

Thats funny i am actually laughing at least i was pretty sore this moanin when i tried to start my car and it made the same sound. It wasnt squeakin like it was but it definatly has a knock. Can you post sound on the forum i think a few of you would get a kick out of how it sounds.
