Question One-off '01 C5? Someone please help figure this out

Maybe my information is totally off, bad sources, etc...But doesnt the corvette (4spd auto) transmission hook up to the engine, then drivetrain back to the rear end? Not in this one. Torque converter? It's got two. Dealership bought from had no idea why. When the oil was being changed, the guy under the lift said something along the lines of "Wow, you've got a Z06 transmission! But wait...its not a z06." Obviously not, its an auto. If it helps, it was optioned with a performance rear end. This car has run (i swear on anything) a 4.2 0-60. With me personally driving. The car is my dad's (i'm 17). He bought it in Oct 01 brand new. We can't figure this out! Someone help please.

Edit: the transmission is mounted in the rear, hooked up directly to the rear end.
