Question 2000 GT - ticking noise from engine

Just recently when I start my 2000 Grand AM GT there is a ticking noise coming from the engine. If you step on the gas it gets louder and faster. So far it has gone away after awhile but I would like to have it fixed while it is still under warranty. If I bring it in and it doesn't do it then they won't be able to fix it. It sounds like if you were to stick a piece of paper into moving fan blades. Has anyone ever heard of this and/or know what it is and how to fix it?????

Re: 2000 GT - ticking noise from engine

First thing is to open your hood, start the car and try to pinpoint where exactly the sound seems to be coming from. Look closely around your serpentine belt, see if there is anything like debris, a wire, etc., rubbing against the belt. Also look at your pulleys on your various accessories [alternator, powersteering pump, A/C compressor, etc.] See if anything is banging against those pulleys.

Listen to the engine, is the noise coming from the heads? Could be valve rattle.

Question Re: 2000 GT - ticking noise from engine

My 98 GT does the same thing, at least it sounds like it. I had 2 people look at it and they both said that the timing chain was bad in the engine. I had the engine worked on and the timing chain replaced, but to no luck. The noice is still there. My noise, is as you accelerate the "ticking" noise increase. Especially it can be noticed when accelerating quickly like to enter the interstate ramps or to turn in front of another car. Is this the same noise as yours? It is very annoying in that it should not be there!!!

So I took my car in and they finally heard that ticking noise. Turns out it was my hydrolic lifters. Since it was covered under warrantty still, they replaced them all.
