1989 Buick Park Avenue Alarm / Car wont start
Hello,
I have a 1989 Buick Park Avenue and lately I've been accidently setting off the alarm somehow. The horn is so loud, and it goes off for 5 minutes. Making a huge scene... well the other day it went off twice in one day. The next two times I started my car it sorta lugged when I turned it over. Well today it just wouldn't turnover at all - not even a click like the starter is engaging. I tried jumping it, no different. All the indicators are working, fan works, headlights work, radio works, door locks, windows, so the car has juice. When I open the door I have an orange 'SECURITY' light that is flashing. Anyone know why my car won't start? Should I disconnect the battery and turn on the headlights to drain the circuit or something? I'm completely lost, any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, anx |

The flashing security light means your security system is actively protecting your car. It will prevent the car from being started by a key other than yours.
Try cleaning your key. The key has a special chip in the shank that your car must read. It is calibrated to a specific resistance. |

This is a 1989 man! Did they have technology like that back then? Hehe.
Well let me say that the last 2 times I started the car before it finally died it did sorta chug when it turned over - like it had not enough juice - but the battery is new and I'm almost certain its charged up high - we tried jumping it. I mean it's not even clicking when I turn the key, just turning on all the indicators. I just tonight tried unhooking the battery for a few minutes and turning on the headlights to try and drain a circuit.. but that didn't help. Thanks for any suggestions, anx |

The new key will need to be calibrated on a computer to fit your specific car's ignition. You just can't cut a new key - it won't work. The chip needs to be set. Sounds to me like a trip to the dealership with the car or a call to a technically capiable locksmith who does housecalls. I know, I know. Broken hi-tec gadgets are a pain.

My key does not have the resistor you're talking about. I had someone look at it.
