transmission issue

I recently bought a 1990 Legacy L AWD with automatic trans. I was told the wrong fluid (not sure what) had been put in the trans. It was drained and refilled by the guy I got it from but had problems since then. On startup the car will drive a couple miles but eventually when I stop at a stop sign or something it won't move again when I hit the gas. If I shut off the engine for a few seconds and start it again it will move again for about a mile and then stop again. My regular mechanic did a trans service on it, after which I was able to take it about 60 miles before the same problem started. Any ideas short of a complete overhaul are greatly appreciated.

Sorry, I don't have an answer but I'm having a similar problem with a family members car that is just now sitting. Its a '91 Legacy 2WD, after it gets warm the transmission seems to slip! I hear a whirling sound in there near where the torque convereter is but I'm not sure if that's the problem. If you find anymore out let me know, I'll do the same.

It looks like you have a blocked filter in the transmission it may be blocked with clutch material making it hard for the oil to be sucked up by the pump and making the car drive.

Thanks! The blocked filter would make the transmission slip after the car has warmed up? Would changing the filter correct this or is there more extensive work that needs done? (Bad Torque Coverter) I guess the only way to know is to take it apart!?!

Re: Re: Re: transmission issue

I think the shop changed the filter when they did the service, so either that's not my problem or the filter just got clogged up again in the 60 miles I was able to drive it after the service and there's something else wrong with it. Thanx for the input anyway.

I'm not interested in putting any money into this car so I'm gonna try to get rid of it. If anyone is in the Northern Virginia area and is interested make an offer. I didn't pay much so I don't expect to get much. As far as I know the trans is the only problem it has mechanically. The body is kinda banged up but it has aftermarket roof rack and trailer hitch installed. I can also arrange for free local towing.

Re: transmission issue

I guess I'm a little concerned to the statement "wrong fluid" and then" drained and refilled by the guy I got it from". Did he know it was the wrong fluid and did he put the wrong fluid in the first time? All that aside. Yes! The filter could be clogged again fom the old fluid that was still in the system if it, the filter, was changed at all. The wrong transmission fluid is a new one on me. But I learn something new everyday. Guess this day is taken care off. lol

It was given to the guy I bought it from after the previous owner put the wrong fluid in. I've heard it's easy to confuse the trans with the differential on these so maybe it was gear oil that was put in the trans. If this link works this is the car:
