Transmission Slipping

Can anyone give me an insider tip on the following occurance.

I have a 96' Grand Cherokee Laredo 4WD V8. Recently when driving if I give it gas quick the engine will flutter, as if it were going to stall. If I baby it it will accelerate fine. The minute I give a lot of gas the engine seems to race then catches. Is the transmission slipping? Or do you think this is more likely low tranny fluid, or bad fuel injection? I haven't yet checked the tranny fluid, but I will this weekend. I don't drive the truck alot, due to the fact that I live in a city, but notice this on short trips in it.

Can anyone give me any clues to this issue? Truck has 121,000 miles on it.

Re: Transmission Slipping

At what speed is this all happening???

I definately would check the transmission fluid level.

How long since a trany fluid and filter change....? Don't go for a flush at all. Just have them drop the tranny pan change the filter and put in 4 qts of ATF+4 from chrysler only. Don't go back to the ATF+3 ever...... The difference in the shift quality is worth the little bit extra you will pay!!!

And a band adjustment while they have the pan off wouldn't hurt it any at that mileage either!!!

Re: Transmission Slipping

This is happening at lower speeds, but mainly when the transmission is shifting gears.

Re: Re: Transmission Slipping

I Have A 94' And Mine Acts As It Slips But It Is A Type Of Solinoid In The Trans That Causes Problems. My Friend Is A Trans Tech He Said That Alot Of Shops Charge For A Rebuild When They Really Don't Need It. Mine Has 187,000 Miles On It And Still Gets Me Around Good. I've Only Replaced Fuel Pump, rad, water Pump, And Cps. But A Very Good Car.

Re: Transmission Slipping

Welcome fusion27

Some questions to help narrow down the problem here.

1.Does the slipage that your experiencing happen every time you move off from a complete stop?

2.How often does this happen?? Warm or cold??

3.I'm assuming that this slippage is happening when the shifter is in the "D" position. Try starting out when the shifter is in the "1" position. Different parts are working to drive the vehicle in the later position so that will help identify the problem.

4.How long has the slippage been happening??

5.What work have you had done on the transmission in the past year??

JD

PS the 54 code is for "No camshaft signal detected during engine cranking." If the engine starts and runs ok, maybe the tech never erased the code after the last CPS replacement or something.

Re: Transmission Slipping

If it is slipping when you start off in "D", it should also slip when you start off in "2" if it is the overrunning clutch.

The overrunning clutch is what holds the planetary in first gear in "D" and "2". When you start out in "1", the rear band holds the planetary to give you "engine braking".

It is not often that the overrunning clutch gives problems but it can happen.

To confirm it is not something hydraulicly with the forward clutch or the apply pressure, you should have the pressures checked with a gauge.

Have you tried changing the oil and filter??

For the best results use the ATF+4 from the chrysler dealer.

Thats all I can remember right now. I'll repost if anything else comes to mind.
