power steering!!!!!!

Hello everyone, My power steering seems to have gone out. I have a 95 J30 with 283000 mi. I assume that the problem is the pump. Does it have electric assist? when it started giving problems it would work and then not work. it would also be easy then hard, easy then hard to steer while turning the wheel . totally random. How hard is it going to be for me to replace the pump? What else could be the problem?

I had the exact problem with my power steering. I had a new power steering pump installed (500.00 + 200.00 labor)
and all was fine for about a month. Just yesterday the steering again started not working . Any advice out there ?

I replaced the pump the other day. It was the pump. Cost about $155.00 plus a little fluid. It took me about 3 hours to complete. Thanks for all the advice.

It was whining for a while as it was going out but then when it went completly out it was quiet. For a newer car it was not really that hard to change.
