Whats the best way to pull the engine?
Welp my cousin finally managed to spin a rod bearing in his Z. We are looking at rebuilding the motor with a 383 stroker kit so I have a couple questions.
1) Whats the best way to pull the engine, as in, should we remove the radiator/rad support, everything in front of the engine for maximum room? 2) What kind of machine work needs to be done on the block for the 383 stroker kit? 3) Assuming he goes with higher compression pistons, what's the highest compression you can run on pump gas (91) without detonation? 4) Will the ECM have to be modified/replaced for all of this or would a dyno tune be enough? 5) Anything else I need to know about the stroker kit?

Re: Whats the best way to pull the engine?
You have to remove the fans, radiator, water pump, power steering lines, y-pipe, intake manifold, steering linkage, torque converter bolts, and ofcourse motor mounts. Then you hoist pull forward (making sure the tranny is supported with a jack.) and twist to a 45 degree angle. You will need to take out the hood strut bolts to get the hood open enough. You will need to have the engine hot tanked and re-bored to 383 specs. Compression will depend strongly on what cam you decide you want to use and head porting stage. His car has a PCM not ECM and it can still be used but will need to be programmed to work with his mods. Is he planning to use a power adder as well and how much power is he looking for?

Re: Whats the best way to pull the engine?
Oh you need to remove the A/C compressor lines and brake master cylinder vacuum hose as well.

Thanks for all the info, I have pulled 350's before on older trucks but not a newer one with limited front end room.
He's looking for 350-400whp which I think is easily achievable with this setup and staying n/a. Is this good for mid/low 12s? Would the heads need to be hot tanked? Do I need to disassemble the valvetrain before I have them hot tanked?

Re: Whats the best way to pull the engine?
The 4th Gen F-bodys engine were loaded from the bottom and are behind the cowl so its a little more difficult than the typical 350 removal. Yes get the heads hot tanked and yes disassemble and your going to be installing news head parts anyway and yes 400 horse is very easy to achieve and he should be running mid 12's with that set up. Good luck to you guys its a bitch but I did my engine in 3 days with a friend only helping me one day.

350 block bored .030 over with a 3.75" stroke = 383
