it doesnt seem to matter if it is cold out or not, i havent really ran the engine for a long time. i took it out once after i bought it and took it to the highway and played around but its just sitting in the shop getting body and transmission work done over the winter, my brother pointed the pinging noise out to me one day when we were working on it, we think it might be a camshaft bearing? i dunno, im already spending too much on cosmetic work and hoping the noise is a minor fix, other than that it has tremendous power.

Re: pinging noise

It could just be the fuel ur using. If ur not using atleast 87 it will ping a little. If u were to say a ticking sound i would say a bent pushrod.

The LS1's also use a short skirt piston. This is a common thing for them druing a cold startup. Not so much cold as in weather wise but cold and in waking up in the morning and staring you car. or letting it set and starting it back up. Since the block is alum. all the different metals will expand and contract at different speeds, thus your pistons will be "loose" in your bores. It should go away after warm up.

My buddys LS1 had a horrible tick in it and we thought it was the pistion slap, but I convinced him to just take it in just to be sure. It turned out he had a few colapased lifters. Thats when the hydraluic part of the lifter won't pump up.

Also if you have been beating on the engine, z28boy has a valiad point. The LS1 is not known for it's valve train. too much rpm too long and you could bend a pushrod in no time.
