I have a 1998 Camry and the front disc brakes have been giving a squeaking noise since I purchsed it used. I replaced the pads with new ceramic that were reccommend by parts store. The problem seemed to go away for a couple months, but has returned. When the brakes get warm and after I have applied them and let up the squeaking noise starts. If I apply a little pressure to the brake peddle the noise stops. It is like the pads drag or something. Anybody see this problem? Please help! Thanks!

Re: 1998 Camry Front Disc Brakes makes noise
Did you replace the pads yourself? If you did, you most likely did not use any disc brake anti-squeal spray or goop on the backs of the pads. We also have a 98 Camry and I did the front brakes with full ceramics last Spring. At, first I followed the Toyota manual to the letter and used high temperature disk brake grease on the backs of both the inner and outer shims. I had the noise. I then took everything apart again and cleaned off the grease I used with rags and brake-clean. Then, I used the old style spray disk brake quiet on the backs of the pads and discarded the shims. I put it all back together and there was no more noise. I favor Permatex Disc Brake Quiet, but any disc brake quiet spary should work. The squeal is actually caused by the pads vibrating in the caliper. The spary is a very tacky substance, after it sets up a few minutes, that causes the pads to stick to the piston on one side and to the caliper itself on the other side. This eliminates the vibration within the caliper and eliminates the squeal.

Re: 1998 Camry Front Disc Brakes makes noise
Mike- Thanks so much for your help and suggestions. I will try what you suggested. Did you remove all the shims behind the pads and discard them? Thanks again! -Bill

Re: 1998 Camry Front Disc Brakes makes noise
fatherkral,
I did not use them. I did keep them in a baggie in my garage, just in case I ever go back to Toyota OEM pads, which I believe are organic and may require the use of the shims again. The Permatex Disk Brake Quiet by itself stopped the noise. Mike |

Re: 1998 Camry Front Disc Brakes makes noise
Be sure to keep the pads in the same positions they are in now. That means on the same caliper and on the same side of the rotor. The pads have already started to seat to the rotors. Also, after spraying the backs, give the pads 5-10 minutes to set up. I wish there was a way I could recommend to you on how to keep the sticky stuff off your fingers when replacing the pads, but I haven't figured that one out yet. Disposable gloves help.
