Hi- It's a bit unsettling to hear this because I've had the same type of clicking noises occur, however I've not had the displeasure of experiencing the transmission lock-up problem you have. Last year I had my 02 in for service, and alerted the service manager to the fact that I was hearing a loud clicking noise when I switch out of PARK. In addition to the clicking noise, movement of the gear shifter beyond the transition point between Park and Reverse would become impeded. Actually, the clicking noise would occur
at that point, and thinking about it now, it would be my personal guess that the transmission lock is slipping back into it's engaged position at that point. I have to push the shifter fully back into Park, and while still holding the brake pedal, only then be able to move out of Park and into gear, with no clicking noise heard. This problem seems to occur only after the vehicle has been sitting for a while, so when they tried to duplicate it on site, the symptom wouldn't show. The technician explained about the transmission safety lock that must be disengaged by first depressing the brake pedal before trying to shift. So, if you try to simultaneously shift out of Park as you depress the brake pedal, you are, for lack of a better way to put it, interfering with the lock release. His instructions were to deliberately depress the brake pedal first, before trying to move the gear stick. As the pedal is depressed you can resolve a very slight, nearly inaudible click sound- that would be the trans. lock disengaging- then you should be able to freely move the shifter out of Park. Problem is, even after following his instructions, I still experience this problem intermittently- not every time. When I do, it seems to show up after the truck's been parked for a while- especially after overnight parking.
I'll bet that your problem is due to that tranny lock being jammed. I also wonder if you experienced any of the symptoms above before your lock-up occured? If you've already found the cause by this point, I'd be interested to know exactyly what it was, and the resolution. My problem hasn't left me stranded yet, so perhaps my dealer is reluctant to really do anything about it. But isn't this what service is for? Preventative medicine? I will be bringing this issue back up again and mention your unfortunate experience for motivational purposes! Thanks!
What's your warranty status? Unfortunately, the 02's didn't yet benefit from the 7yr/70,000 drive train warranty. Anyway, hope this is of some help to you.
