The power windows on my Sable recently stopped working. They will not go down from the drivers door control or any of the individual door controls. The manual does not mention a specific fuse that controls the power windows that I can see. Also, perhaps related, my dome lights and door lights are also out although I still have power lock control and side mirror control. Any thoughts as to what might be the problem?

Re: '96 Sable power window problem
Start with a wiring diagram and a test light and see if you are getting power to the switches.
I have made enlarged copies of the wiring diagrams for my cars. This makes it easier to read and trace the circuits. I have also used colored markers to highlight and mark off circuits as I have checked them. By tracing the circuits, you will find out where the power originates. If you have power, then check the grounds. |

My girlfriends sable has similar problems but only the rear driver window won't go down. And when the doors are closed sometimes the dash light and dome light will stay on constantly or will go off after about a minute delay. Anyone have suggestions for this problem open for suggestions.

th30n3th3ym1ss3d- start with the window motor and work back. See if you are getting power to the window motor. Test the motor. With the motor out does the window go up and down easily.
Use a wiring diagram to to trace the electrical circuit and test each part. Be patient and methodical. |

Re: '96 Sable power window problem
KimMG- Thank you for the reply I know what steps to take just haven't had time to get to it so if anyone knew something that they had the same thing and found the problem I could look specifically instead of starting from scratch thank you for the reply though.

Very, very strange. My daughters '96 Sable is doing the same thing, rear drivers won't work and interior lights issue.
I haven't investigated it yet because it's such a pain in the @ss to get the door panels off. Does anyone have a source to replace the christmas trees? The local auto parts stores don't carry a good selection of Ford door panel hardware. I do notice that the lights will dim slightly when the switch is activated. This makes me belief it's a motor problem, probably froze up.

Re: '96 Sable power window problem
5not4-The last time I needed door panel hardware, I ordered it from the dealer. It wasn't that expensive and the parts guy mailed me the clips.

KimMG, thanks for the suggestion.
I guess your first thought is the parts store before the dealer. I kind of figured I would end up there at the end, anyhow. |

Re: '96 Sable power window problem
The window on the passenger door would not work from any control. I chased it down to a bad contact in the button on that door they are designed with a type of backfeed circuitry that can be tempermental if not making proper contact. I was able to make it work by taking the switch apart and flexing the contact springs to increase there tension.
