After-market AC install in Civic?

Howdy..I'm exploring the options of installing AC in a 1998 Civic DX, and since Honda doesn't make the kits anymore it would be a patchwork after market job. Is this a smart thing, or should I start looking for a new car? I'm hearing from some mechanics that it's not a good idea since repairs would be a pain, but the install (quotes of around $1500) would be cheaper than a new car...
Thanks

Go to your local junk yard (hopefully there's one close to where you live). And ask them for complete AC kit for your car. The whole thing should cost you about $250~$450. You will need someone able to install it for you this way. $1500 quote from the shop is a bit high, I got quote for about $1200.
